IISC-Isaac Centre for Public Health 105 World-class research centre for public health March -2022 March-2026

Introduction:

The Isaac Centre for Public Health (ICPH), situated within the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) campus, represents a significant stride towards establishing healthcare systems that are resilient.

The partnership with IISc was driven by three pivotal factors:

  • the accessibility of medical data from the adjacent Bagchi-Parthasarathy Hospital
  • the infusion of pure scientific and core engineering expertise from the institute, and
  • the recognition that the world’s leading public health institutions have blossomed through a multidisciplinary approach.

Therefore, IISc was the natural choice in India for harnessing big data computation to create a world-class public health center. ICPH is being established with this precise vision.

Objectives:

The ICPH, set to become operational by 2024, aims to inspire future professionals to embark on careers in clinical research and the development of innovative healthcare solutions.

It will offer dual-degree programs, including a

  • Master of Public Health (MPH)-PhD (5-6 years)
  • Master of Public Health (MPH)-MTech Research (3 years).

The anticipated annual intake of students will be approximately 10 per year, with a steady-state student population of around 40 over time. Additionally, the Centre will house cutting-edge biomedical research computing infrastructure to manage data, develop, and test big data analysis methods specifically tailored for public health.

Facilities and Infrastructure:

ICPH will be housed within the IISc Medical School’s Academic and Research Block, occupying a single floor covering an area of 27,000 sq ft. Alongside offering courses in statistics, epidemiology, and data science, the Center will provide students with opportunities for engaging in meaningful research leading to advanced degrees.

Impact:

The funding from Ajit Isaac Foundation will play a pivotal role in supporting the ICPH’s initiatives. This includes scholarships, international fellowships for students, endowed Chair Professorships, and Visiting Chair Professorships. Furthermore, the Center will allocate funds for conducting impactful research projects in public health, encompassing areas such as bio-surveillance, digital health, and mobile-based diagnostics. Through these endeavors, ICPH is poised to make a substantial impact in the field of public health and contribute to addressing healthcare challenges on a global scale.
