The St. John’s Geriatric Centre is an ambitious initiative located on the campus of St. John’s Medical College Hospital in Bangalore. This standalone 7-storey facility is dedicated to serving the elderly population, defined in India as individuals aged 60 years and above. The project represents a commitment to comprehensive care, training, research, and community engagement for our senior citizens.
The purpose of the St. John’s Geriatric Centre is to provide holistic care for the elderly, including day-care, short-term care, long-term care, and hospice care for the terminally ill. Additionally, the project aims to offer training programs for caregivers, conduct groundbreaking research in aging and geriatrics, and engage with the community to raise awareness, provide education, and empower elders and their caregivers.
The St. John’s Geriatric Centre project is a collaborative effort made possible by generous contributions from the philanthropic community in India and around the world, including Ajit Isaac Foundation. The project relies on the land donated by St. John’s and reflects the commitment of various stakeholders to improve the lives of senior citizens. Construction commenced in 2022, with support from these partners, though there were some delays due to external factors.
With the third floor’s roof cast, the construction is well underway, and the structure is expected to be completed by late 2023, with finishing touches applied by early 2024. The St. John’s Geriatric Centre is poised to become operational in April-May 2024. Once operational, this center will not only provide essential care to the elderly but also serve as a hub for training, research, and community engagement. The impact of this project extends far beyond its physical structure; it embodies a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for our elderly population and advancing the field of geriatric care in India.
